The front cover of Assault is a water color painting by Scott Roop. I've always thought it perfectly captured what it feels like in the last 10 strokes of a really close race - as though you've been stripped of all your skin, blood flowing freely, your eyes exiting your skull. Quite wonderful, really.

Scott was painting from experience. He won the gold medal at the 1981 World Championships in the lightweight single scull. Later he went on to great success as the coach of Brown University men's rowing team, both novice and varsity. During his first year of coaching the freshman at Brown, this lightning fast crew included two future single scull superstars: Jamie Koven (gold '97 Worlds) and Xeno Muller (gold '96 Olympics).
